One of the easiest things to do with a Wacom tablet is creating a transparent signature digitally for use on digital documents or creating fun wordart for your layouts.
This tutorial uses Photoshop CS3 and Inkscape as programs for creating a digital signature, as well as a Wacom Create tablet.
Inkscape is a free open source program similar to Illustrator, just not as elegant or as easy to use.聽 It uses the SVG file format but can export to many other graphics formats.聽 You can download this program for free.
First, it鈥檚 best to get comfortable with writing on the Wacom tablet and seeing how it鈥檚 placed on the screen in Inkscape.聽 Test out the tablet by scribbling a bit and feel the pressure sensitivity of the pen works.聽 The square in the middle of the screen replicates your paper.
The pen and pencil tools are located here.
The undo and redo buttons are located under edit.
The pen tool seems to work the best for clarity and smoothness.聽 Start by writing out your name on the tablet.聽 Don鈥檛 worry so much about complete smoothness at this point.聽 Each start and stop of the signature is one element part. Note that the width of the lines can be changed here.聽 The first signature is at 4 and the 2nd聽is set at 1.
Here, there are 4 parts, the V, the O, the estergaard, and the underline.聽 To select them all, draw a box around the entire signature.聽 To select them individually, choose the select tool and point/click on the letter.
To smooth out the lines, go to PATH>SIMPLIFY.聽 Simplifying is basically the Inkscape automatically removing a node from the line drawing and making it smoother.聽 Each click of simplify will change the path.
To save as a png, select FILE>EXPORT BITMAP.聽 A box will pop up.聽 Choose BROWSE and locate where the file should be save at. 聽Inkscape will give it a numerical name automatically or you can change it. Hit SAVE.聽 Another box will appear.聽 Click on EXPORT.
The signature is now in png file format which is transparent and can be placed on top of most documents.聽 To further make changes, open in Photoshop to manipulate it. Since Inkscape is an SVG file format, it鈥檚 not that critical in terms of size.聽 It should be able to enlarge or reduce easily and without jaggedness.
